Getting a Head Start

Give your Soundcloud profile and tracks a boost to give them a headstart in your promotion

Let me say right off, some have a problem with this stage, but it is important. At the end of the day, you do as you please, me I am trying to promote music so I will do what is needed. The music business has never been a clean and honest game. Labels have always tried to give their artists a head start, getting them out there by any means necessary, whether this was directly paying for good reviews, paying for the cover of the magazine / zine, paying to be included on the free tape / CD, paying to get a band on the support role of a tour. But lets not forget about the more indirect, underhanded methods of taking reporters out and getting them drunk, high in return for good reviews. Sex drugs and rock n roll. It has always happened and it still happens, just in a different way.

When you upload a new track to Soundcloud or any site, it is naked. 0 plays, 0 likes, 0 comments. This says something about a track to users who find it but don't know you, the artist. No one has listened to it, it isn't worth listening to. This is an unconscious reaction. Users can only listen to so much music as there are hours in the day. All the tracks uploaded to Soundcloud in a day cannot be listened to, users have to use their listening time wisely. And your naked track doesn't make the cut.

But you can fix this. Get everyone you know to listen to it, like it, comment on it, repost it. Post it up on facebook, Google plus, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram etc and out right ask for feedback. You don't need 1000s of plays, as obviously a new track takes time to get to those levels, but you do need some social recognition. Also be aware, that when you repost your track, it will appear again to all your followers. The same if you add the track to a playlist. Do not do this on the same day as uploading the track. New tracks are also syndicated to your followers.

Upload the track. Few days later repost it. Few days later add it to a track list. Few days later repost it again (unrepost first) Few days later repost it again;-) Each time it is syndicated to your followers. By doing this you can ensure as many of your followers will see the track as possible – but there is a fine line or ensuring those who do not log in every day see the track and annoying those who have seen the track 10 times and now unfollow you. So do not unrepost and repost more than a 3-4 times.

This leads on to the next logical step, "how can I boost my stats to the required level". This is the part some have an issue with. You can manually increase your stats using Soundcloud bots and online services. Personally, I don't like to use services as these guys are just in it for the money and don't care about your tracks or your account. If it is worth doing, it is worth doing it right. And that means, YOU doing it. I use a program called Soundcloud Manager that allows me to boost my plays, gives my tracks likes, comment on my tracks with multiple users and repost the tracks and a lot more. Don't go crazy though, as fake stats glare out a mile away if an unknown artist has a million plays and the track has only been released a week ago.

Give yourself a head start, that's all. Stats boosting is not the end game. Real fans, real listens, real likes, real comments, this is what we want. But a little boost to get those will get you on your way.
